Periodontology - Gum Disease

Periodontology or periodontics is the dental specialty dealing with gum disease (periodontitis). Gum disease is caused by plaque around the teeth and leads to the destruction of the bone supporting the teeth. As a result gums recede and teeth become loose leading to discomfort and a reduction in function.

Factors which can increase the risk of periodontitis are smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, hormonal changes etc. There is a link between heart disease and periodontitis and with many other medical conditions good healthy gums are essential.

It is possible to treat gum disease using a variety of treatments; improvement of home oral care, deep cleaning and surgery. The treatment chosen will depend on the severity of the disease.
